Review of 2008:

January
Our monthly meeting was addressed by Lesley Foster from Telford Amnesty Branch on the subject of the AIUK campaign to address human rights issues and abuses in China.
Members met later in the month for a very convivial evening and a good pub meal at the Tankerville Arms, Longden (see below)

February
Stop Violence Against Women Campaign. Eric Windsor, a senior local  magistrate, talked to us about the work of the [then] new
approaches in the criminal justice system in Shropshire to cases of domestic violence.

March
Our own Peter Pack, Chair of AI International Executive Committee, advised us
concerning the Human Dignity Campaign

April
Mark Phillips, of Tyndallwoods Solicitors, spoke to us about Control Orders

June
For our major public campaign of the year we spent time in the Square, Shrewsbury, drawing attention to the plight of the Tiananmen Mothers in China. Members of the public signed petition cards and attached each one to an artificial rose. We sent a box of nearly 200 roses and petitions to the Chinese Ambassador in London.
At the end of the month we held a very successful Garden Party, courtesy of Mr and Mrs John Quallington at Cruckmeole (see below)

September
We were very pleased to welcome Daniel Kawczynski, M.P., to our meeting when he
gave a most interesting account of his work on the International Development Committee and of aspects of his parliamentary life. He offered also future assistance in presenting petitions in London to our government and to foreign embassies.

October
At this month's meeting a discussion was lead by our own Anthony Twist concerning AIUK’s long-standing campaign to abolish the death penalty across the world.

November
Denise and Omid Samari led a discussion at our November meeting in which attention was drawn to the discrimination in Iran against members of the Bahai faith.

Garden party - 28 June 2008

Over 250 people helped to raise £1,245.62 at the Garden Party on Saturday 28th June at the home of John & Rosaleen Quallington.
In fine weather visitors were entertained by the Shrewsbury Concert Band, the Banat Baladi Belly Dancers, The Democratic Republic of Djembe, the Choir of the Pontesbury Church of England Primary School and the Shrewsbury Folk Ensemble – a programme of great variety and colour.

Pat Horton, Paul Jaques, Jenny Lack, Kate L’Argent, Don Miles, Pat Miles, and Debbie Walklet all set up craft stalls.
Jo & Ken Pattison brought along a range of goods from the Shrewsbury Fair Trade Shop. Members of the Shrewsbury Group of Amnesty International ran the books, bric-a-brac, cakes & jams, plants, refreshments, and tombola stalls. The Bowl-for-a-Pig and Balls-in-Tins games were well supported. John Quallington conducted very popular tours of the Old Hall.
Cllr. Ann Chebsey, Mayor of Shrewsbury & Atcham, was welcomed at 3.30pm by Martin Beardwell, Shrewsbury Amnesty Chairman.

All who contributed in any way at all to this occasion are thanked for what turned out to be a great event raising far more than had been dreamt about. Particular thanks go to John & Rosaleen Quallington for their graciousness in offering their home for this occasion.

‘Terrorism & Security : Rights in the Balance’ – April 2007

Speaker: Lord Carlile of Berriew, QC – Independent Reviewer of Terrorism Legislation

Lord Carlile, the independent reviewer of the Terrorism Act, was the keynote speaker at Amnesty International’s public meeting at the Gateway on Tuesday 3th April. The Shrewsbury group of AI organised the meeting as part of its campaign to uphold human rights in the “War on Terror,” and a large and attentive audience heard Lord Carlile give a first-hand account of his experiences as the reviewer of recent terrorism legislation.

He spoke fluently and precisely about the nature of Control Orders, about the definition of terrorism in existing legislation, and about the difficulties of extraditing terrorist suspects to countries in which torture takes place. He also analysed the arguments for and against extending pre-trial detention from 28 days to 90 days; about the disadvantages of bringing suspects to trial in secret, non-jury courts; and about the management of people under control orders who suffer from mental health problems.

The talk was followed by a thought-provoking question and answer session in which Lord Carlile addressed a wide range of points and gave a fascinating comparison of anti-terrorist legislation in the UK, France, Spain and the USA, indicating the strengths of the UK system compared to the realistic alternatives.
