Campaigns

As well as campaigning for the release of individual prisoners of conscience, we are also undertaking two other more general campaigns as part of
Amnesty International UK.

Stop Violence Against Women

Problem? What problem? is a campaign that aims to confront:

  • the way we tolerate violence against women,
  • the way we justify violence against women, and
  • the way we ignore violence against women.

Most of us probably think that we don’t do these things. But when over 30% of us think that violence against women is OK, and when 50% of us think that domestic violence should be kept behind it quickly becomes clear that we do.

Control Arms

The lack of control of the arms trade is fuelling conflict, poverty, and human rights abuses worldwide. Every government is responsible. Oxfam, Amnesty International and IANSA (International Action Network on Small Arms), are campaigning to bring the trade in weapons under control. Click here for more details.

Refugees and Asylum

Amnesty International’s goal is to bring about a fair and effective asylum system. We attempt to achieve that goal in a number of ways – carrying out research into aspects of asylum policy and practice, developing proposals for improving those policies and practices, and then promoting our proposals with the Government, MPs and other influential audiences.

Death Penalty

Amnesty International opposes the death penalty because it is a violation of two fundamental human rights, as laid down in Article 3 and 5 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights: the right to life, and the right not to be tortured or subject to any cruel, inhuman or degrading punishment

Amnesty is currently campaigning for a resolution at the General Assembly calling on the global moratorium on executions. The resolution will be introduced at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) 62nd Session which begins on 18 September 2007. The adoption of such a resolution by the UN’s principal organ would be an important milestone towards the abolition of the death penalty. Therefore the success of it is vital for the abolition movement. One of the tools to support this campaign is a global petition run by the World Coalition Against the Death Penalty (WCADP). The petition is based on the 2000 UN petition launched by Community Saint Egidio and Amnesty International. The petition has gathered so far 5 million signatures. The WCADP would like to see this number increased as a sign of support for the resolution. Please click below to sign:

Terrorism, Security & Human Rights

Amnesty campaigns to:

·        bring and end to denial of fair trial and the torture and ill treatment of ‘war on terror’ prisoners at the hands of the US authorities

·         bring and end to the failure of the UK Government and other states to protect and promote the human rights framework at home and abroad.
